Registering the card on a Google account by NFC (phone)

On a phone the AmbiSecure card registers by NFC tap rather than USB. The Google security-key flow is the same, but you hold the card to the back of the phone instead of inserting it.

  1. On your phone, open your Google Account and go to Security → 2-Step Verification.
  2. Choose Add security key and select the NFC option when offered.
  3. When prompted, hold the AmbiSecure card flat against the NFC antenna on the back of the phone.
  4. Keep it still until the phone confirms the tap and reads the card.
  5. Name the key and save; it now works for NFC logins on that account.

Before you start

The phone flow replaces the reader with an NFC tap, so the prerequisites are about the handset rather than about USB:

  • NFC must be switched on. On Android it is a system toggle; if it is off, Google's key prompt will simply never see the card.
  • Know where your antenna is. NFC coils sit in different places on different handsets — often upper-centre on Android, near the top edge on iPhone. This is the single most common reason a tap fails.
  • Thick or metal cases block the field. Take the case off for enrolment; you can usually put it back afterwards once you know the sweet spot.
  • 2-Step Verification must already be on, exactly as on the desktop flow — the phone does not change Google's prerequisite.

What is specific to Google on a phone

The credential the card creates over NFC is the same credential it would create over USB. There is no separate “mobile registration” — register once by tap and the card authenticates over USB on a desktop afterwards, and the reverse holds too. The transport changes; the credential does not.

Two platform differences are worth planning around:

  • Android handles the tap inside Chrome, and the system NFC service brokers it. You do not need the Google Smart Lock app for a hardware key.
  • iOS supports NFC security keys through Safari, but the tap prompt is presented by the system rather than the page, and the reader window is short. Hold the card still against the top of the phone until the sheet dismisses itself.

If the tap is not detected

  • Nothing happens at all — move the card slowly across the back of the phone. You are hunting for the antenna, not pressing a button.
  • The tap registers and then fails — you moved the card too early. NFC ceremonies need the card held still for a beat after contact.
  • “NFC not supported” — check the system toggle first; some Android battery-saver profiles disable NFC without making that obvious.

Do I need to register the AmbiSecure card separately for phone and desktop?

No. NFC and USB are just transports. A credential registered by tapping the card on a phone authenticates over a USB reader on a desktop as well, and the other way round.

Why is my phone not detecting the AmbiSecure card over NFC?

Usually the antenna position or the case. NFC coils sit in different places on different handsets, and thick or metal cases block the field, so remove the case and move the card slowly across the back of the phone.

Does the AmbiSecure card work with Google on iPhone?

Yes. iOS supports NFC security keys through Safari, but the tap prompt comes from the system and the read window is short, so hold the card still against the top of the phone until the sheet closes.

Is 2-Step Verification still required when registering from a phone?

Yes. The prerequisite belongs to the Google account, not the device, so 2-Step Verification must be on before the security-key option appears in either flow.

Does the AmbiSecure card need a battery, charging, or Bluetooth pairing?

No. The card is passive: it draws power from the phone's NFC field during the tap and from the reader over USB on a desktop. There is nothing to charge and no pairing step.
